Free photopad image editor

PhotoPad Photo Editor is a raster and vector graphics editor developed by NCH Software[1] and is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Android devices.[2]

PhotoPad is available in both free and paid versions. While the free version is limited, the paid version offers unrestricted use of features such as liquid resizing and offers full access to layers and the clipart library.[3]

Editor

Functionality of PhotoPad ranges from flip, crop, and rotate, to more advanced options such as collage creation, and double exposure. [4] With color-management tools, you can modify the color of images to enhance the scenery or lighten a room.

PhotoPad supports 20 different file formats.[5] Images can be exported in common formats like JPG, PNG and GIF. [6] PhotoPad allows direct uploads of these projects to social sites like Twitter and Flickr and creates no watermarks.

History[edit]

PhotoPad’s name is a common product naming scheme used by NCH Software. PhotoPad joins a list of audio and video “Pad” products such as VideoPad, WavePad and MixPad.

PhotoPad was originally released as a freeware product in January of 2012 for both Windows and Mac platforms. In December of 2013 PhotoPad released a paid version for Windows and Mac platforms in addition to maintaining the free versions. PhotoPad introduced a mobile version for the Android operating system in 2014.[7]

Interface[edit]

In contrast to similar photo editors, PhotoPad displays a multi-layered interface.[8] This interface includes a history and layers bar allowing users shortcuts to their preferred filters. This type of interface is particularly useful when editing images in batch form.

In September of 2016, PhotoPad introduced a dark theme making it the first product developed by NCH Software that implemented a dark-themed interface. The dark theme was popular with users and was implemented in other NCH Software products soon after PhotoPad.

PhotoPad’s interface provides drag and drop functionality when overlaying images.

Reception[edit]

PhotoPad has received positive reviews from many websites in addition to some criticisms.

In their review of PhotoPad in 2016, Gizmo’s Freeware noted that: “The feature that really sets PhotoPad apart from other programs is the history and layers sidebar which shows everything that you have done.” The review continued and indicated that the “lack of drawing tools” was its biggest deficiency.[9] As noted by TopTen Reviews, PhotoPad has since integrated drawing tools.

In 2017 Toms’ Guide reviewed PhotoPad favorably noting its price point in that “it represents an excellent alternative to much more expensive photo editing suites.”[10]

The following year, in 2018, TopTen reviewed PhotoPad and deemed it “A good program for beginners to learn and grow with.” However, they went on to criticize the software for its lack of organizational tools such as creating albums, and picture searches. [11] In response, PhotoPad version 5.45 implemented a photo library that lets you organize your photos by grouping them into albums and by assigning tags.

PhotoPad's Tools[edit]

HDR[edit]

Use the HDR (High Dynamic Range) merging tool to combine three different exposures of the same scene in order to preserve details in the shadows and highlights. The HDR tool can be found by clicking the HDR icon on the Tools tab of the toolbar.

Draw Tool[edit]

The Draw Tool lets you draw on a photo, similar to basic paint programs.[12]

Color Removal[edit]

The Color Removal effect removes pixels with colors close to the selected color (sets alpha values to zero).

Noise Reduction[edit]

The Noise Reduction layer reduces the noise present in photographs that have been taken in low light situations.

Double Exposure[edit]

Parts of the overlay image may be erased with the brush tools. The image can be moved, resized, or rotated.

Batch Editor[edit]

The batch editor is used to apply filters and effects to multiple images at once.

Effect Eraser Tools[edit]

The effect eraser tool allows users to paint-in or paint-out an effect from parts of your image.[13]

Auto Grid Layout[edit]

This tool is a subsidiary tool and can be found under the collage tools in PhotoPad. Clicking on an image lets you resize it while still maintaining a packed layout, or one photo can be dragged over another over another.
