I’ve been doing the Insanity Max30 program for over a year now and have seen some amazing results! I can’t wait to tell you why I highly recommend this program!

First of all, let me just say that this post is not sponsored, but I have been wanting to share for a while now about my experience with Insanity Max30. I posed a survey on Instagram to see if you were interested in hearing about it, and over 80% of you responded with “Yes”! I’m always wanting to hear about what others do to stay fit, so I’m hoping this is beneficial to some of you!

This post is quite lengthy, so I hope you’ll stick with me through it. I’ve broken it up into sections to make it more manageable and readable. 🙂 I shared parts of this journey on Instagram stories, you may have seen. The above photo is two months into the program. Friday Fight Round is both the worst and best!

I’m going to take you through my motivation for starting the program, the journey/process and the results I saw.

  1. MOTIVATION: Let me first just say that I’m not a scale person at all. I try not to make judgments about myself based on what the number tells me. For about 1o years of marriage, we didn’t even own a scale until my husband ended up purchasing one. But, at the start of 2018, I could tell that my clothes were fitting tighter and I just wasn’t feeling energetic and like my normal self. I wasn’t exercising regularly and my dessert consumption was getting out of control (you know how I love my sweets). So, after deciding that I wanted to make some changes, I weighed myself so I could have a starting/comparison point. When I saw the number, I honestly wasn’t too shocked. Creeping weight gain had occurred and I knew it before the number told me that. What I felt was a determination to take control of my life and get back into shape.

I’m a runner and have participated in countless sprint triathlons, 5k’s and other events. The competition is what drives me to work out and be my best self, but I had lost that love and focus for too long. So it was time to get back at it!

I signed up for a 5k that I had done twice before, and that is what motivated me to start working out and eating better. I wanted to start a high intensity work out program so I could get into shape quickly and stay that way. I also wanted to become a faster runner and I knew I’d need to really get down to business to make it happen. My sister and I also set a goal to compete in a very challenging 7 mile trail run in her area and I bought a plane ticket out there, so there was no turning back!

I’d heard great things about Insanity Max30 (it’s notorious for being hard core) and wanted to prove to myself that I could do something really difficult.

2. A quick run-down on how Insanity Max30 Works: When you purchase the program, you’ll receive two sets of dvd’s-one for Month One and one for Month Two. Each set consists of 5 dvd’s (for five days of the week), each with different focuses. For example, in Month Two the focuses are: Cardio, Strength, Power, Sweat, and Friday Fight. There are also bonus “Pulse (Recovery)” and “Abs” workouts with each set. Each day you’ll be challenged to the max for 30 minutes with a few brief water breaks in between. Month one is tough enough, but helps prepare you for month two. where you’ll really be tested!

No special equipment is necessary-you’ll be lifting your body instead of weights. 🙂 The goal is to go as hard as you can for as long as you can, until you can’t anymore and then you “max out” and write your time down. You’ll finish the workout and then try to improve that number and go further each day and each time you start that workout. Challenge yourself to make it the entire 30 minutes without stopping, but I have yet to do that!

Insanity Max also offers meal plans, but I chose not to do that.

3.THE JOURNEY: My first day at Insanity Max30 in January of 2018 was HARD to put it bluntly! One of the toughest things I’ve done, next to giving birth. 🙂 I remember wanting to cry and lay down and die. There was lots of groaning and moaning happening as I weakly and pitifully powered through it. I wasn’t sure how I could make it to the end of the 30 minutes, let alone two months (it’s a 60 day program). I felt discouraged and wanted to quit. But I kept pressing play each day. And slowly I started to get stronger, both physically and mentally. The workouts didn’t get any easier. I still wanted to scream and yell at Shaun T. for putting me through it, but I was more equipped to accomplish it. I could go for longer before “maxing out” and my limbs felt less like jello as I was doing it. I hesitated to start each day, but afterwards I felt like I could do anything!

After completing the two month program, I felt stronger. I noticed some toning and definition in my mid section, legs and arms. I could do more burpees and jumping pushups than I ever thought possible! This noticeable progress fueled me forward!

About three months into the program, I started running again and found that my endurance was like it never had been. I could go further than I ever had gone while still feeling energized. The photo above was taken after I finished my very first 7 mile run! The most I had ever gone was 3 miles before the start of 2018. I had convinced myself that was all I could do. I slowly started ramping up my mileage and eventually made it to 8 miles before my trail race in October!

4. RESULTS: In April, I completed the 5k I had signed up for in the beginning of 2018 and ended up getting 4th place over women with a time of 21:41. It was difficult to say the least! There were many times when I wanted to slow down or even stop. The pavement looked like a really nice place to lay down and rest. But I pushed myself to my absolute limits, stayed at the front of the pack and finished strong. I had never really experienced anything like this before starting Insanity Max30. Throughout 2018, I realized the great role our minds play in tackling hard things. Pushing ourselves beyond our limits is as much a mental test as it is a physical. Just when my body seemed to not want to go on, my mind kicked in and told me that I could.

In March, I tried on a favorite dress that I hadn’t been able to wear in years and it fit comfortably! I could actually button it up without feeling like I was going to burst out of it! You probably have those clothes in your closet that are a great gauge of how you are doing in your fitness journey. This was that dress.

For me, it was never really about the weight (although I did shed the unwanted pounds), but about getting back in control of my body (what I was eating), getting fit, having energy again and proving to myself that I could do hard things. It was about making healthy, sustainable lifestyle changes.

My husband and I took a trip to Big Sky, Montana and Yellowstone in June and hiked 10+ miles a day, sightseeing. I was amazed that I could do that and not feel sore or completely exhausted afterwards! In fact, I felt rejuvenated and eager to do it again the next day!

My sister and I completed the Stinson Beach 7 mile trail race that we’d been working towards for months. It ended up being more like 8 miles. The terrain was extremely challenging, the hardest I’ve ever done. The first 4 miles was an intense, steep climb up, up, up the mountain. We climbed ladders and crossed log bridges. My sister took a hard fall on a hill and got some scrapes and bruises (luckily nothing more serious), but got right back up again and kept running. She’s a champ!

At one point, probably mile 3.5, when we were still climbing and there was no end in sight, I was sure I couldn’t go on. I started shutting down and told my sister to leave me behind, but she called out just the encouragement I needed and I pushed through the pain.

When we reached the peak, we were so tired and ragged, but we were rewarded with the most incredible view! It looked like we could walk on the clouds and the sun was just coming up! It was breathtaking! We crossed the finish line together and placed 1st and 2nd in our age divisions, 14th overall.

I attribute my fitness accomplishments in 2018 wholly to Insanity Max30. It got me into top shape physically but also gave me that self esteem boost that I needed to do what I never knew I could. I continue to do the program at least 3x a week, and it’s still hard for me! It pushes me to my limits (the fast genie jumps will always be my nemesis). I love and hate it all at the same time, haha!

It is the catalyst that started me on the track to a healthier life. So each time when I’m torturing myself, I also think about this journey, how far I’ve come, and my goals for the future, which include a half marathon in April! Wish me luck!

And now the burning question is, “Do I still get to enjoy my treats?” and the answer to that is, “OH, YES!” I believe it’s all about finding the right balance. And some days that means a cookie in both hands. 🙂

If you’ve been sitting the fence about getting into shape and starting a challenging workout program, I’m here to tell you, you can do it! You are stronger than you think!

I want to let you know that Insanity Max30 requires a lot of jumping, (so if you have bad knees or ankles or a bad back, it’s probably not a good idea). Be sure to check with your Dr. first, and know your limits after starting. Altogether, it’s an incredible program that helps transform both the body and mind!

I’d love to hear what you do to stay fit!
